About Petculate
Petculate exists because most pet calculators online are unsourced. They hand you a number (cups, years, calories) with no formula behind it and no way to check the work. When that number decides how much your dog eats, that's not good enough.
So this site follows three rules:
- Published formulas only. Every calculation implements a formula from veterinary guidelines (WSAVA, AAHA/AAFP), major institutions (AKC), or peer-reviewed research (UCSD's epigenetic clock). Never a made-up shortcut.
- Show the work. The methodology page lists every formula, its source, and its known limitations. Result panels show the math, not just the answer.
- Honest about what this isn't. Petculate is an independent educational project built from the veterinary literature. It is not run by a veterinarian and it is not veterinary advice. Calculators set starting points; your vet, and your pet's actual body condition, make the decisions.
