Dog Age Calculator

One dog year is not seven human years. Your dog's first year alone is worth about 15. After age two the pace depends on size: small dogs add about 4 human years per year, giant breeds up to 7. This calculator uses the size-adjusted chart vets actually work from.

Why the 7-year rule is wrong

Multiplying by seven assumes dogs age at a steady rate. They don't. A puppy goes from newborn to teenager in about a year, which is 15 human years of development. By two, she's a full adult, roughly 24 in human years. Then aging slows down and splits by size. A 10-year-old Chihuahua is like a 56-year-old person. A 10-year-old Great Dane is closer to 79.

The chart here is the size-adjusted conversion published by the American Kennel Club, the same one used in veterinary practice. For dogs a year and older, we also show the epigenetic estimate from the 2020 UC San Diego DNA study so you can compare the two.

Method 1: the veterinary chart

Year one counts as 15 human years. Year two brings the total to 24. Every year after that adds 4 for a small dog, 5 for a medium, 6 for a large, and about 7 for a giant breed. Vets like this chart because it lines up with when dogs of each size actually hit middle age.

Method 2: the epigenetic clock

In 2020, researchers at UC San Diego sequenced DNA methylation in 104 Labrador Retrievers and matched the aging curve to humans. The formula they got: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It says dogs age very fast early on. At the molecular level, a 1-year-old dog resembles a 31-year-old human. The study only looked at Labradors, though, so we show this one as a labeled comparison rather than the main answer. The two methods disagree for young adult dogs, and that's expected. Our dog years guide explains why.

Frequently asked questions

How many human years is one dog year?

The first dog year equals roughly 15 human years, not 7. The second year adds about 9 more (a 2-year-old dog ≈ 24 human years), and each year after that adds roughly 4–7 human years depending on the dog’s size. Small dogs age slowest after age two; giant breeds age fastest.

Is the 7-year rule accurate?

No. It started as rough shorthand decades ago and stuck around because it was easy to remember. Dogs mature very fast in their first two years, then age at a rate that depends on their size. Veterinary charts and the 2020 UC San Diego study both show the relationship is far from a straight line.

Why do small dogs live longer than big dogs?

Larger breeds age faster at the cellular level and are more prone to age-related diseases like cancer, so a Great Dane is considered a senior around age 7 while a Chihuahua may not be senior until 11. Researchers are still working out the exact mechanism, but the size–longevity pattern is one of the most consistent findings in canine biology.

What is the epigenetic dog age formula?

Researchers at UC San Diego (Wang et al., 2020, Cell Systems) compared DNA methylation in dogs and humans and derived: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It maps molecular aging rather than lifespan, and because it was calibrated on Labrador Retrievers it is best treated as a second opinion alongside the size-adjusted chart.

At what age is my dog a senior?

Roughly: small breeds around 10–11 years, medium breeds around 10, large breeds around 8–9, and giant breeds as early as 6–7. Senior status matters because it changes recommended vet-visit frequency, diet, and screening tests.

How old is a 10-year-old dog in human years?

About 56 human years for a small dog, 60 for a medium dog, 66 for a large dog, and 79 for a giant breed, using the size-adjusted veterinary chart.
