Dog Calorie Calculator

Most neutered adult dogs need somewhere between 300 and 1,300 kcal a day, depending on size. This tool does the actual vet math for yours: RER = 70 × (weight in kg)0.75, times a WSAVA life-stage multiplier. There's a weight-loss mode too. It works from ideal weight, not current weight, which is how vets set it up.

For weight goals, enter the target weight, not current.

How daily calories are calculated

Veterinary nutrition starts from the Resting Energy Requirement (RER), the calories a dog burns doing nothing all day: RER = 70 × (kg)^0.75. The daily target, called the Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER), multiplies RER by a life-stage factor from the WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines:

WSAVA life-stage factors (× RER)
Life stageFactor
Puppy under 4 months3.0
Puppy 4–12 months2.0
Adult, spayed/neutered1.6
Adult, intact1.8
Senior / less active1.4
Very active / working2.0–5.0 (we use 2.5)
Weight loss1.0 × RER at ideal weight
Weight gain1.2–1.8 × RER at ideal weight (we use 1.4)
Pregnant (last trimester)3.0
Nursing4.0–8.0 (we use 4.0)

Daily calorie needs by weight (neutered adult)

Estimated kcal/day at 1.6 × RER
WeightCalories per day
10 lb ≈ 348 kcal
20 lb ≈ 585 kcal
30 lb ≈ 794 kcal
40 lb ≈ 985 kcal
50 lb ≈ 1164 kcal
60 lb ≈ 1335 kcal
70 lb ≈ 1498 kcal
80 lb ≈ 1656 kcal
90 lb ≈ 1809 kcal
100 lb ≈ 1958 kcal

Once you have a calorie target, the dog food calculator converts it into cups of your specific food, and the feeding guide covers label reading and body-condition scoring.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories does a dog need per day?

A typical neutered adult dog needs roughly 1.6 × RER, where RER = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75. That works out to about 400 kcal/day for a 10 lb dog, 700 kcal for a 30 lb dog, and 1,200 kcal for a 70 lb dog. Puppies, working dogs, and nursing mothers need far more; dogs on a weight-loss plan need less.

What is RER in dog nutrition?

RER stands for Resting Energy Requirement: the energy a dog burns at rest, calculated as 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75. Vets multiply RER by a life-stage factor from the WSAVA guidelines to get the daily target, called the MER.

How many calories should my dog eat to lose weight?

The standard starting point is 1.0 × RER calculated at the dog's ideal weight, not the current one. From there you adjust based on monthly weigh-ins. Get a vet involved in any weight-loss plan, especially past 20% overweight.

Do treats count toward daily calories?

Yes. The common guideline is to keep treats under 10% of daily calories so they don't unbalance the diet. For a 700 kcal/day dog, that's 70 kcal of treats, which is fewer biscuits than you'd think.

Why does my vet’s number differ from this calculator?

Life-stage factors are ranges, not constants. An active dog can need anywhere from 2 to 5 × RER, and vets also adjust for body condition, breed, and health issues. The formula sets the starting point. Your dog's weight trend over the next month sets the real answer.

How is this different from the dog food calculator?

This tool gives a calorie target (kcal/day). The dog food calculator takes that target plus the calories printed on your food’s bag and converts it into cups per meal.
